Description: The Greenbelt protects over 1.8 million acres (7300 km2) of agricultural and environmentally sensitive land within and around the Greater Toronto Area from urban development. It includes the Niagara Escarpment, the Oak Ridges Moraine and the Protected Countryside. The Greenbelt Protected Countryside extends into Toronto in the Rouge Valley (see Official Plan Map 2).

They contain habitats for species at risk or species of special concern; habitats of unusually large size or high diversity; rare and unusual land forms; or they provide ecological functions that help to maintain a healthy ecosystem within and beyond the city such as providing stopover locations for migratory wildlife. Areas identified as ESAs are the foundation of natural biodiversity in Toronto's ravines. There are 86 ESAs designated in the Official Plan (see Map 12A).

Description: The heritage register is a list required under the Ontario Heritage Act that identifies properties of cultural heritage or interest that have been listed or designated by City Council under Part IV and V of the Act. The Inventory was started in 1973, it currently comprises approximately10,000 properties ranging from well-known landmark buildings and structures to private homes and properties in heritage districts.
